HOWTO: Modifying the Facebook “Nickelback Joke” For Good (Or Evil)

If you’re an avid Facebook user, you’ve probably encountered a joke link floating around prefaced with something like “This link will show you which people on your friends list you should unfriend”.

Upon clicking said link, you’ll see a list all of your friends who have liked the Facebook page of the band Nickelback.

For reference here is the link:
https://www.facebook.com/browse/friended_fans_of/?page_id=6248267085

Though initially you’ll be disgusted and amused by this, you’ll wonder…

Can I use the principles behind this to see which of my friends are fans of other pages?

The answer is yes! In the link above I ask you to draw attention to this bit: page_id=6248267085

The series of numbers following “page_id=” is what I’ll be referring to as a Facebook page’s IDNUMBER.

So to make this work with another page, you’ll need to obtain the page’s IDNUMBER.

How do I obtain a Facebook page’s “IDNUMBER”?

For the purposes of this tutorial, I will show you how to obtain a Facebook page’s “page_id” using the WebKit Inspector that is built into Google’s Chrome browser and Apple’s Safari browser.

Step 1

Browse to a Facebook page, in this example, one of my favorite LA bands, P L a N E T S! (https://www.facebook.com/planetsplanetsplanets)

Screen Shot 2014-09-11 at 2.09.05 PM

Step 2

Right click on the “Invite your friends to like this page” link and choose Inspect Element.

Screen Shot 2014-09-11 at 2.13.50 PM

Step 3

You should see a block of HTML code highlighted and you’ll see “page_id=IDNUMBER”. Where IDNUMBER is a series of numbers. Copy this IDNUMBER.

Step 4

Paste the IDNUMBER into the original “joke link”, replacing the bit that says 6248267085 and BAM! Now you have your own customized version of the link!

From the above example, to display all friends that are fans of the Facebook page for “P L a N E T S“, the link would be:
https://www.facebook.com/browse/friended_fans_of/?page_id=48530103683

Go flex your newly discovered Facebook power, whether it be for good or evil, only you can decide!

LA River Bend – Old Fashioned Singers

Not only did I get to watch two of the best bands in Los Angeles, The Janks and LA River Bend, last night at one of Hollywood’s most intimate venues, Hotel Cafe but also I received a copy of LA River Bend’s first single with their current lineup, Old Fashioned Singers!

I love everything about this song and definitely one of my favorites to see played live. I hope LA River Bend doesn’t kill me for putting this track up, It’s just so good and I wanted everyone to hear it!

Do yourself a favor and see LA River Bend at their upcoming gig at Sassafras in Hollywood on June 17th!

LA River Bend – Old Fashioned Singers

I want my MTV… NOT!

Though the idea of watching music videos on MTV has long since become stuff of legend, the art of the music video is not dead!

Here is a selection of music videos by some of my favorite LA Bands! If you guys dig these, music video posts may become a regular occurrence!

P L a N E T S – Blood Red Sun

For the uninitiated, this music video is a crash course introduction to P L a N E T S and The Darkwoods. I’m not responsible for any P L a N E T S addiction you may incur, but if you need your P L a N E T S fix, their live shows are a must!

Mars and the Massacre – Four Loko Blues

Mars and the Massacre has a great sense of humor and it shines brightly.. err darkly in this video. Beer and zombies. What more do you need?

Paul & The Kir – Ryan

For those of you that are moviephiles, I know you have a favorite actor and in Paul & The Kir’s case, this actor is named Ryan. Which Ryan you say? Watch and see…

Spencer Livingston – Have a Little Faith

Spencer shows us the perils of being too immersed in technology…

Jason Landon Marcus – The Drugs

Drugs are bad MMMkay…
